ECG Compression Library for Long-Term Monitoring of Heart Function in Mobile HealthCare Systems

Background and Motivation: 

It is known that cardiovascular and ischemic heart diseases are the leading cause of death in the developed countries. Long-term continuous monitoring of heart function provides a way to discover the problem early and take timely measures to prevent sudden heart attack.

A variety of wearable devices are available in the market with the feature of electrocardiogram monitoring. These devices can be connected with smartphones and provide data for applications. According to forecasts of research2guidance experts the smartphone applications will become the killer applications in mHealth solutions in the near future.

Nevertheless, long-term continuous monitoring leads to a problem of huge amounts of electrocardiogram data. Recently a number of efficient compression algorithms have been developed for ECG signal processing. These algorithms need to be adapted for using in mobile applications.

Project Summary: 

Within the project we are developing the cross-platform ECG compression software solution on the base of available algorithms, taking into account mobile computing constraints. The solution is developed in the form of  easy-to-use library that provides lossy compression method based on discrete wavelet transform with following features:

  • High compression ratio;
  • Reconstruction possibility of important medical features of initial signal;
  • Phone battery tolerance.

June 2011. Overview of related work and publications. Adapted code of forward and inverse DWT. Project plan and software requirements specification.
July 2011. API design and documentation. Test plan and constructed test scenarios.
August 2011. Working library prototype. Demo signal collection. Signal reconstruction quality evaluations from Medicine faculty experts.
September 2011. Optional data processing steps API (Burrows-Wheeler transform and lossless compression step).
October 2011. Ready-to-use library package. Full user & developer documentation.
November 2011. Report at FRUCT conference.
November 2011 – March 2012. Improvement of the mean compression ratio of Alive Heart and Activity Monitor recordings.
November 2012 – March 2013. Integration to the arrhythmia detection application.
April 2013 – October 2013. Integration to the server part of heart activity monitoring service.
